In particular, Portland has proved popular with companies wishing to set up home port facilities on account of its proximity to the shipping lanes and the availability of land for the construction of custom designed facilities.

Portland has also built up a wide range of marine services and today can offer visiting ships a full range of marine fuels from BP and Conoco operated terminals, specialist engineering and diving services from Companies located within the Port as well as fresh water and waste removal. Portland is, therefore quickly becoming recognised as the marine equivalent of a motorway services on account of its unique location and wide range of facilities.
